What is a Swedish massage, and is it the right one for you?
Swedish massage is the one most people picture when they think “massage” — long, gliding strokes, steady rhythm, warm oil. It is the most requested therapy at our Gachibowli spa, and for most first-time guests it is the right place to start.
The short answer
Swedish massage is a full-body treatment built on five classic strokes, worked over the muscles with oil at light to medium pressure. The goal is circulation and nervous-system calm rather than deep structural change.
If you want to leave feeling loose, warm and genuinely relaxed — rather than worked-over — this is the therapy to book.
The five strokes, in plain language
Effleurage — long gliding sweeps that spread the oil, warm the tissue and set the rhythm. Every session opens and closes with these.
Petrissage — kneading and lifting, much like working dough, to release the broader muscle groups across the back, shoulders and thighs.
Friction — smaller circular pressure worked into specific tight spots, usually around the shoulder blades and lower back.
Tapotement — light rhythmic percussion. Stimulating rather than relaxing, so your therapist will use it sparingly and ask first.
Vibration — gentle shaking that helps a guarded muscle let go when it will not release under steady pressure.
What it actually does
The honest version: Swedish massage is very good at helping you downshift. The steady, predictable rhythm moves you out of a stress state and into a rest state, which is why so many guests fall asleep partway through.
It also increases local circulation, eases the general stiffness that builds from long hours at a desk, and leaves the muscles warmer and more pliable. What it will not do is resolve a chronic, years-old knot in a single session — that is deep tissue territory.
Choosing your duration
60 minutes covers the full body at a comfortable pace — back, shoulders, arms, legs and a short scalp finish. This is the most-booked option and the right default for a first visit.
90 minutes gives the back and shoulders roughly twice the attention without rushing the rest. If you sit at a screen all day, this is the one worth paying for.
120 minutes is unhurried, with real time on the feet, hands and scalp. Best on a weekend when you have nowhere to be afterwards.
How a session runs at Vaayu
Every session opens with a short consultation — pressure preference, oil choice, and any areas to focus on or avoid. Tell your therapist about injuries, recent surgery or pregnancy at this point.
You then undress to your comfort level in a private suite and lie under a sheet. Only the area being worked on is uncovered at any time. Pressure is adjusted throughout, and you can ask for lighter or firmer at any moment — a good therapist would rather you spoke up than endured it.
Afterwards, take it slowly. Drink water, avoid a heavy gym session for the rest of the day, and give yourself a few minutes before heading back into Gachibowli traffic.
Swedish or deep tissue?
Pick Swedish if your goal is relaxation, stress relief, better sleep, or it is your first massage.
Pick deep tissue if you have specific, persistent knots — the kind that have been there for months — or you train hard and need recovery work.
Plenty of guests alternate: deep tissue when something is genuinely stuck, Swedish the rest of the time. If you are unsure, book Swedish and tell your therapist where it hurts. They will adjust.
Common questions
No. Swedish massage works at light to medium pressure and should feel comfortable throughout. You may notice mild tenderness where a muscle was particularly tight, but sharp pain is never the goal — tell your therapist immediately and the pressure will be adjusted.
Only to the level you are comfortable with. Most guests keep underwear on. You are covered by a sheet for the whole session, and only the area being worked on is ever uncovered.
For general stress relief, once or twice a month suits most people. If you are working through a stressful period or have persistent desk-posture stiffness, weekly for a few weeks then tapering off works better.
It helps with the general muscular tightness and stiffness that come from posture and stress, and many guests get real relief. For a specific injury, a pinched nerve or a long-standing structural issue, see a doctor or physiotherapist first — massage supports recovery, it does not replace medical care.
