Aromatherapy massage: how the oils actually change the session
Every massage here uses oil. What makes aromatherapy different is that the oil is chosen for its effect on you — and that scent reaches the brain by a far more direct route than touch alone.
Why scent does something touch cannot
Smell is the only sense wired straight into the limbic system — the part of the brain handling emotion and memory — without being routed through the thalamus first. That is why a scent can shift your mood before you have consciously identified it.
In practice this means an aromatherapy session tends to settle people faster. The massage itself is a flowing Swedish-style treatment at light to medium pressure; the oils do the additional work.
Choosing your oil
Lavender — the default for sleep and anxiety. If you are lying awake at 2am with a busy head, start here.
Eucalyptus and peppermint — clearing and cooling. Good during congestion, humidity, or when you feel heavy and sluggish.
Sweet orange and lemongrass — lifting rather than sedating. The right pick for a mid-afternoon session when you still have your evening ahead.
Ylang ylang and geranium — warm and floral, for when you are wound tight and irritable rather than tired.
Rosemary — stimulating and often blended for focus, frequently paired with a shoulder-and-neck emphasis.
What a session involves
Your therapist begins with a short conversation about how you are feeling — not just physically. Sleeping badly, stressed, low energy and “I just want an hour of quiet” all point to different blends.
The chosen essential oil is diluted into a carrier oil (never applied neat to skin) and warmed. The massage runs at a slow, steady rhythm, generally lighter than deep tissue, with extra time on the neck, shoulders and scalp where tension shows first.
Many guests drift off. That is a good sign, not a waste of the booking.
What it helps with
The strongest evidence is around stress, anxiety and sleep quality — areas where the combination of touch and scent genuinely outperforms either alone.
Guests also book it for tension headaches, low mood during long work stretches, and general fatigue. It is a gentler therapy, so if your main complaint is a specific stubborn knot, deep tissue will serve you better — or book aromatherapy and ask for firmer pressure through the shoulders.
A note on safety
Essential oils are potent. We always dilute them properly, and there are cases where specific oils are avoided — during pregnancy, with epilepsy, with high blood pressure, or on sensitive and broken skin.
Tell your therapist if you are pregnant, have a medical condition, or have ever reacted to a scented product. There is always a suitable alternative, including an unscented carrier oil with the same massage.
Common questions
A standard oil massage uses a neutral carrier oil purely for glide. Aromatherapy adds essential oils selected for a specific effect — lavender for sleep, eucalyptus for congestion, citrus for energy — so the scent works alongside the massage rather than being incidental.
Yes. Your therapist will suggest a blend based on how you are feeling, but the choice is yours. If you dislike a particular scent, say so — an oil you find unpleasant will work against the relaxation, so there is no point pushing through it.
Massage during pregnancy can be very helpful, but several essential oils are avoided, particularly in the first trimester. Tell us you are pregnant when booking so the therapist can select a safe blend, adjust your positioning, and keep pressure appropriate.
A light trace usually lingers for a few hours, which most guests enjoy. If you have somewhere to be, ask for a lighter dilution or shower afterwards — though leaving the oil on the skin a little longer gets you more from the treatment.
